So, this comment here at Seanan McGuire's journal put this idea in my head, and it just refused to leave. My first post and really first filk- please feel free to offer suggestions? *is shy*

Inspired by the novel Feed, by Mira Grant, and ttto Summertime, by Gershwin. (I don't think it's spoilery, but it does discuss a little bit of character dynamic.)

Summertime
And the dead are uneasy
Corpses walkin'
Mean the end times are nigh

Oh, your daddy's smart
But your mom shot your brother,
So hush little baby,
Don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're gonna rise up shambling
And you'll eat your friends
And your family too

But until that morning
All these blood tests protect you
And mommy and daddy's careful eye

Like! No spoilers, it could apply to any family in the scenario (in pretty much any vampire movie for that matter), if you know the book (and the backstories) then you may associate it with a particular one or may not, if you don't know it it won't spoil anything.

I'd repeat the first verse pair, like the original (or just say "repeat first verse" to remind people), or if you can come up with an extra verse pair that would be even better. But nothing wrong with it at all...

Thank you! I think that's a good point- the version of the song I sang in voice classes tended to leave out that last repetition, so I honestly forget about it!

Well done and I would also repeat the first verse.

FWIW, when I was writing my filk of Summertime, the recording I listened to and the lyrics I looked up did not have that repeat. And when I've sung my filk at filk sings, no one has ever commented about my not doing the repeat.

All my fault, I'm afraid. I'm glad you did it before I had to. (It's a zombie meme virus!)

Hopefully not as contagious as its rhinovirus parent? ;P

It does miss one rhyme. Perhaps instead of "and your family too" you could have "and your family will die."

As someone who knows and loves the original, I especially loved the first two lines of verse 3. :)

Haven't read the book yet. But I like this effort. I think Seanan will be pleased.

You should definitely read it- I just recently finished it and was floored. It definitely deserves its Hugo nom.
