    "What is FILK?"
Last night I had a writing session with one of my friends and mentioned how [info]seanan_mcguire is up for four Hugos, three for writing and one for her FILK CD, Wicked Girls.

    "What's FILK?" my friend asked.

I tried to explain. It wasn't clicking. So I typed "Banned from Argo" into YouTube and we watched the FireFly compilation. I was wondering of an actual video of the song exists, preferably with the lyrics embedded. Because I think he missed half the jokes as we quoted Firefly lines at each other.

    Searching for a disc?
Can anyone help me find the following? I'd prefer (legal) download, but CD is also good.

What I'm looking for is Cynthia McQuillin's Uncharted Stars, one of the only Filk albums to make me cry--once when first listening to it (even my memory of some of the tracks can make me teary) and again when my car stereo ate my tape. I found a CD once online, but when I tried to order it, it told me they were out of stock and they never got them back in so far as I've been able to discover.

    Thanks!

Leslie Fish/Avalon is Risen: official pre-order announcement!
[thanks to [info]reedrover for mentioning this, too]

For the past 4 years, producer Kristoph Klover has been dedicating sweat, passion and countless hundreds of hours of late-night studio time on a quest to deliver Leslie Fish's most evocative and crafted recording yet, capturing Leslie's personality and her guitar wizardry at its best.

Titled Avalon is Risen, this project features newly crafted recordings of Leslie's best-known and most powerful Pagan and bardic songs. Songs that are thoroughly enjoyable by Pagans and non-Pagans alike.

And I'm thrilled to announce that it's finally at the duplicators, and ready for your pre-order!

By pre-ordering, you'll be first in line to receive the first CDs on June 15th. And thanks to the Internet, you'll also receive a full MP3 album download instantaneously.

Honoring the bardic tradition of these songs, we commissioned Celtic illustrator Bradley Schenck to create a 32-page, fully-illustrated color lyric booklet that's as beautifully crafted as the CD, designed in the tradition of finely ornamented Celtic books. (And did we mention an introduction by author Diana Paxson herself?! ;-)

As an extra bonus, your pre-order entitles you a 25% limited-time discount off any of CDs or digital downloads of our other albums (featuring Julia Ecklar and friends) -- and our gratitude for your support in making this independent music possible.

    somewhat delayed addendum to FilkFAQ
(This is what comes of Googling for /Phrolicon/...)

Always on the lookout for interesting con names, old or new, I stumbled upon Phrolicon, a Philadelphia relaxacon that ran from maybe 1986 to maybe 1997 (Aug. 1-3, Phrolicon 13,    Mt. Laurel, NJ,  GOH Connie Willis. Source: SIGMA 136). And my minstrel wand'rings led me to a post on the Dandelion Report- Updates LJ, a query for Filk songs written for or about SPECIFIC FILKERS?, where [info]jonbaker wrote "On a sillier note, Phrolicon Phire Phollies, from the last Philly Philk Phlash, loosely based on a bunch of people who stayed in a room at Phrolicon in 1989, including several filkers (Doug Ayen, Lisa Padol, Harold Feld I think)".

And I thought of my own filk "Nancy Buttons" and added another comment... even though the post was dated 2004-11-08, and the LJ hasn't been updated since 2005, and the FilkFAQ links in it are 404 & Co.

    Filk on Silk
I've created a Filk page on Silk, http://filk.silkapp.com. At this point I'm exploring what their alleged "semantic web" capabilities are. If anyone's interested in being added to the project, let me know. I'll need an email address (at this point I have no idea whether Silk spams or not), so I'm screening comments to let you provide me one. Initially I'd like to keep the number of contributors small till it's clearer what it's all about, so ask to be signed up only if you want to edit content. Anyone can read the pages. I'll unscreen comments that don't have email addresses unless you request otherwise.

Searching for the RIGHT Mary Dubuisson
Back at GaFilk, someone handed me a piece of paper with that lady's name on it, along with the annotation "Gulf Bay Filk Group".

Unfortunately, whoever that was did not write down which state Ms. Dubuisson inhabits.

There are several Mary Dubuissons in WhitePagesOnline. Up to seven, some of the times I've looked. Some of them even live along the Gulf Coast. I tried sending a snailmail to the one in Slidell, LA, but never got an answer.

If anyone out there knows more about this subject, please give me feedback.

    New Song
This one is not on the new album, but may well end up on the next if people like it.  Also the music director at the UU church told me she's interested in doing some of my songs over the summer, and this is one of the ones I'll probably offer.

    I Am Like You
lyrics and melody by Catherine Faber 2012
    a capella mp3 here

    D A
    We are alike, in strength and need;
    G D G A
The tears we shed are salt; if something cuts us we both bleed.
    D A
Our lives are dear, and all too brief,
    G D D A G
We both reach out for happiness; we both must suffer grief.

    A D A
I am like you, you are like me
    G D A
With our spirits held in common, in our shared humanity.
    D A
We can choose love, instead of strife,
    G D G A G
    And work to bring together what we value in this life;
    A D
    I am like you.

We can give pain; we can give mirth
We can give comfort, love and knowledge, as a measure of our worth.
We live our lives, and take our shot:
Let's make this life the best we can, in case it's all we've got.

The world is wide, the sky is old--
Fairness, freedom, care, these fragile values I will hold
    Our mayfly lives can heal or kill;
Our choices here define us as a force for good or ill.

    Every Major's Terrible
    XKCD commits filk.

Thanks to [info]twwells for pointing this out -- I would normally have looked at it myself by now, but today had a major (planned) disruption.

Update: Errol has sung it on YouTube!

    FilkOntario (Somewhat Late)
So I have not been posting lately and most of my online time is quick comments on other people's stuff, and this is rather late, but I wanted to report that FilkOntario was AWESOME! Alan and I had a wonderful time seeing friends old and new (although it seems to me that there is a problem when the last two times we have seen Dave Clement was in Toronto when we live literally one block apart!) and hearing great music and making some.

We were deeply honored to be the featured Canadians and it was our FIRST EVER concert at a Filk Con. (can you tell I am a bit excited about this?) The concert went well, I think - everyone laughed in the right places and sang along on the choruses and several people asked for the lyrics to some of the songs and said nice things afterwards. Not that one would expect a filk audience to be mean, but they didn't have to seek us out to say nice things.

And the GOH concert was wonderful and I got to be part of the women's chorus for the first number, and the Hall of Fame Inductions were awesome, with the HOF Concert the next day even more fun. So all in all a terrific weekend and thank you so much to the hard working Con Com and volunteers who make it all possible!!

I was inspired (so to speak) to write a parody right after closing as Alan had been giving a hand here and there to the sound crew and got referred to as a "mic ninja" once too often. I sang it at the Dead Dog and a number of people asked for the words, so here they are:

    The Truth About Mic Ninjas
(TTO The Truth About Ninjas, by and with apologies to S. J. Tucker)
New words by Morva Bowman FKO 2012

    Paragon of techno staff
He's competent, not lethal (we hope)
But there's more to life than microphones....

Soundman comes quite easy when technology's your life
You think you're all prepared but faulty gear will cut you like a knife!
You will never see it coming - someone broke the microphone
Yet in your eyes I see the panic you are not prepared to own.
But moving swift and surely you fix problems as they land -
It's a mic ninja thing; we wouldn't understand.

We don't often notice you until things go awry
It's the mic ninja way to pass unseen until they hear the cry.
Moving quieter than kittens, circumnavigating cords
    Tiptoeing capable and crafty -
Until you pounce and disappear again we cannot hear a thing
The sound files may have been corrupted but the mic connection's clean!
Your actions quick as lightening always helping us shine through -
You're only doing what the soundman's gotta do!
Da da do da, do dada do da

Following the way, taping cords to stay
I won't say life is hard...but you must restrain your urges to pretend that
    you're the bard!
Could a soundman do some singing, though it isn't often done?
To confront the mic is scary - but damn would it be fun!
To see the ConCom's eyes as big as saucers peering from the back -
You pirouette beneath the spotlight, days of running cords and plugging
and then juggling the microphones no more!
Just one burst of music from the soundman and the crew
They'd just be doing what mic ninja's gotta do, wouldn't you?
Just take off singing like mic ninjas gotta do!

    Caltech Folk Music Society
Here's a note about the next Caltech Folk Music Society concert, featuring Jeni & Billy in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) in two weeks, Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 PM.  We are so keen on this duo that we booked the show well over a year in advance, to make sure we could get them to Caltech.  Jeni, originally from Smith Ridge, Virginia, and Billy, from Baltimore, Maryland, now live in Mount Gilead, North Carolina.  Their music consists of both original and traditional songs, and is steeped in Appalachia.  Featuring wonderful harmonies, wrapped around guitar, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, they amaze us in how something so seemingly simple can contain such depth and is able to stand up to repeated listenings.  Here's a clip of one of our favorites, If I Ever Get Ten Dollars- http://www.youtube.com/watch?.v=9qU64Yngelc&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL6C5DD44AF647DF99 at Merlefest 2010 (a real "who's who" of bluegrass/folk), the huge annual festival that is held in honor or Doc Watson's late son, Merle.

We probably can't describe Jeni and Billy any better than Si Kahn, the great songwriter and activist, who said "Jeni’s singing sounds to me like a cross between the young Hazel Dickens and the young Iris DeMent. The songs range from raw and powerful to sweet and funny. The instrumental work is excellent; the harmony singing is just what you’d want it to be."  Songwriters Lisa Bernstine-Sturz and Fran Mandeville told them, "I can't tell you how many times we have listened to your CD now. It is our favorite. It feels to me like a great novel where I've come to know and love the characters so much that I find myself thinking about them as though they are real and am so absorbed in their stories that it's sad when the book comes to an end."  Jeni and Billy show the timeless power of a traditional folk song, and they are able to tap into those elements in their own writing.  Their web site is http://www.jeniandbilly.com and ours is http://folkmusic.caltech.edu.  Tickets are available for cash at the door, and the Ticket Office will take credit cards over the phone.  For information, call the Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652.  Make your plans now!

Another reminder about the celebration for Pete Seeger's birthday and fundraiser for Pitt Kinsolving, this coming Thursday, May 3, featuring Ross Altman at the Talking Stick in Venice.  See http://folkmusic.caltech.edu/pitt.html for details, or reply to this message.  Ross will accompany himself on banjo, 6-string, and 12-string guitar, and sing Pete's songs, as well as songs Pete likes to sing, written by people like Woody Guthrie.  Members of the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club will also perform, and, just as Pete would have it, you can sing along!  The price is $15 and all proceeds go to helping Pitt.  We hope to see you there.  If you are interested in carpooling from the San Gabriel Valley area, reply to this message or call (626) 616-4559.

And this Sunday,  April 29, the FolkWorks fundraiser at 7PM in Santa Monica will be another treat for a good cause.  See http://folkworks.org.

Finally, last week, we mentioned that Cornell University has a live web cam keeping tabs on a red tail hawk laying on eggs, and a great blue heron doing the same.  In our rush, we forgot to include the link.  Now the baby hawks have hatched, and there's still plenty to see at http://www.livestream.com/cornellhawks for the hawks and http://www.livestream.com/cornellherons for the herons.  It is pretty amazing to see nature like this.  But it can be addictive.

It's the sad, sad story of a migratory
flock of birds one autumn morn.
While traveling south from the Hudson's mouth
    they encountered a sudden storm.
The freakish weather stripped the underfeathers
    from every gander and goose,
And you may guess how the popular press
    headlined the unusual news:

I am cross posting this here with permission from Roberta.

Copied from her facebook post -

    Roberta Rogow:
My father, Stanley Winston passed from this life at about 3 PM this afternoon. He was 94 years old, and he lived every one of those years with passion, intelligence, and wit, and a driving desire to make the world better. He was, in the Yiddish phrase", A Gute Mensch. Y'isgadal v'yiskadash shm'ei raba.
